Ferrari F1 boss blames car not strategy for team's inability to win Sunday's Hungarian GP

Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto claims it was not the strategy but a slow car that cost them during the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday.

After the race, Binotto faced questions about Ferrari's strategy, which has been found wanting at times this F1 season, having initially looked the dominant team during the first three races of the 2022 F1 season.

During mid-race in Hungary, Ferrari introduced Hard tyres to Charles Leclerc's car when reacting to Red Bull's undercut, which looked like a mistake as there was much more life in the Mediums.

Leclerc qualified third but finished sixth, while teammate Carlos Sainz qualified second but finished in fourth place.

'The car was not working'

When asked about the introduction of the Hard tyres, Binotto said: "I think the main reason, before to come why we decided for the hard tyre, I think it's important to say that we believe that the car was not working as expected. We didn't have the speed we were hoping for looking back at the Friday and the pace we had in the race conditions on Friday.

"So [the race] was certainly different conditions, a lot cooler. But overall, the speed today was not great enough, and whatever tyres we were using, I don't think we were as good as we were looking for and as good as we were.

"Certainly, even worse with the Hard," he said of the pace. "So when we fitted the Hard, our simulation was that it could have been a difficult couple of laps of warm-up, it would have been slower to the medium for 10-11 laps, and then it would have come back and been faster than the end of the stint, and it was a 30-lap stint.
