FC Edinburgh in historic occasion as they return to Meadowbank during Arbroath cup match

FC Edinburgh returned to Meadowbank for the first time in five years in their Premier Sports Cup clash with Championship side Arbroath.

Manager Alan Maybury had to set his side up for tough task against a team in the division above them and eventually the League One side fell to a 3-1 League Cup loss. Callum Crane penned his name in FC Edinburgh history when he fired the hosts ahead in front of a capacity 499 crowd before Nicky Low and a superb brace from Bobby Linn won it for the Red Lichties.

Maybury's Meadowbank side sit fourth in Group E and will take on Lowland League newcomers Cowdenbeath before a trip to Premiership side St Mirren round off their efforts at this stage in the competition.

Maybury told the Edinburgh Evening News: "We're not going to be judged against the likes of Arbroath who finished second in the Championship last season.

"They're still part-time, they work hard and they're physically a bit stronger than us. They showed more composure than us and they're very good at what they do.

"The goals are preventable but also when we did get the chance to break, we didn't show enough composure.

"There are things we need to improve on but we're still a couple of weeks from getting there. I know where we're at but we do need to be a little bit better than we were."
