Fandi Ahmad joins Malaysian side Pahang as technical adviser

SINGAPORE: Malaysia Super League (MSL) side Pahang announced on Thursday (Jul 21) that Fandi Ahmad will be the club's new technical adviser.

This comes weeks after the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) said that Fandi would be stepping down from his role as Singapore's head of elite youth. The decision was mutually agreed between Fandi and the FAS, the association said.

Pahang are currently second from the bottom in the 12-team MSL.

During his playing career, Fandi played for Pahang for two seasons, where he won the league and cup double in 1992.

Since calling time on his playing career, the Singapore football legend won the S-League (now Singapore Premier League) twice with Singapore Armed Forces FC, and guided Indonesian side Pelita Jaya to promotion to the Indonesia Super League.

Fandi’s time with the FAS began in 2014 when he was appointed head coach of LionsXII. He guided the team to lift the Malaysia FA Cup the following season.

After the LionsXII disbanded, Fandi remained with the FAS as a staff coach until he was appointed as Head Coach (Youth) in 2016.

He then took charge of the Young Lions at the start of 2018 and was subsequently appointed as the interim men’s national team head coach that year.

He led the senior side at the ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup 2018 tournament. Fandi led the Under-22s to win the Merlion Cup in 2019 and was also in charge of the team at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in Manila.

On Thursday, Pahang also announced that team manager Dollah Salleh has been appointed interim head coach.
