'Expressed an interest': Spurs eye £17.2m Euro 2020 star who provided 'assist of the tournament'

Tottenham Hotspur  are interested in Atalanta wing-back Joakim Maehle, according to Danish outlet Tipsbladet (via Sport Witness).

Atalanta signed Maehle from Belgian outfit Genk as recently as January 2021, committing him to a four-and-a-half year contract.

But the 25-year-old was in and out of the side last season, starting only 15 out of a possible 38 league games.

Spurs have already signed a wing-back for their system in Ivan Perisic, but Evening Standard journalist Dan Kilpatrick says they could yet add another.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is a ‘possible destination’ for Maehle after the Lilywhites ‘expressed an interest’, says the report.

His chances of leaving Bergamo are put at around 30 per cent, but the report does stress that a sale ‘cannot be ruled out’ if Spurs stump up between €20million and €26.7million (£17.2million-£23million).

Maehle may be familiar to English audiences after impressing at last summer’s European Championships.

He scored in a 4-1 win over Russia in the final round of group fixtures to help Denmark reach the knockout phase.

And he was on target again in a 4-o rout of Wales in the Round of 16, before providing an assist in a 2-1 quarterfinal win over the Czech Republic to set up a semifinal meeting with England.

Goal named him in their team of the tournament, dubbing him a ‘phenomenon’ and calling his assist in the last eight ‘outrageous’.

And Zach Lowy labelled the ‘delectable trivela cross‘ for Kasper Dolberg ‘the assist of the tournament’.

Based on these showings, he could be an excellent addition.

In other news, The Guardian say Spurs are eyeing this UCL winner.
