Expanded qualification system for Gulf nations at inaugural Esports Nations Cup

RIYADH: Recently announced wildcard mechanisms for the inaugural Esports Nations Cup in Riyadh this November — solidarity slots, host region slots, and special invites — introduce structured pathways designed to expand global, nation-based esports competition, including representation opportunities for Gulf Cooperation Council member nations, according to the Esports Foundation.

The framework aims to address structural, technical and regional barriers that can limit access to international competitions, with the aim of ensuring broader global representation across the event through clearly defined, criteria-based pathways that align with the overall competitive structure, the foundation added.

Host nation slots are commonly used at international sporting events to ensure local representation and drive national fandom in the host country, and the Esports Nations Cup aims to establish a similar framework for its rotational hosting model. For this year’s event, however, the slot will be assigned to the host region instead of a host nation, the foundation said, to ensure representation among Gulf Cooperation Council member states through a merit-based system across all game titles. Slots will be awarded to the highest-performing Gulf nation that has not already earned a spot through existing qualification pathways.

Solidarity slots will provide a structured, performance-based pathway for underrepresented countries and territories to compete at the event, the foundation said. Available across all titles except Counter-Strike 2, they provide a unique opportunity for players from countries and territories with smaller esports footprints to be represented on the global stage, thereby making the event relevant to more fans
