Ex-Sheffield Wednesday striker backs Owls promotion hopes if they secure a play-off place

Sheffield Wednesday made a real statement of their promotion intent in the 6-0 thrashing of Cambridge United on Saturday.

The Owls moved back within a point of the play-off places heading into their final 10 games of the season.

They are outside the top six at present but the fate of Darren Moore’s side is still in their own hands as they have two games in hand over Oxford and Sunderland who sit fourth and fifth in the table.

Wednesday would have to win just one of those matches to go above the Black Cats while victories in both would take them into fourth.

Moore would fancy his chances should he steer his side into the play-offs between now and the end of the season and one of the club’s former strikers believes they have a great chance of promotion.

Clinton Morrison, who played at Hillsborough between 2010 and 2012, was full of praise for what the manager has done so far this season.

"Darren Moore has done a brilliant job; I think if you said it a month and half ago then there might be some question marks over him," he told FreeSuperTips.

"But they've had a lot of injuries to do with and I'm not making excuses for them, but they've managed to turn it around recently.

"I think he's a brilliant manager and I would love to see Darren Moore and the club back in the Championship.

"They just need to get players back, but they're getting results, building up some confidence and they have a great chance of getting into those playoffs.”

The lottery of the short play-off campaign is something that Wednesday would, of course, have wanted to avoid by earning promotion through the automatic places.
