Ex-Purdue Basketball Star Zach Edey Throws Clunker Of A First Pitch At Chicago Cubs Game

Zach Edey is better off sticking to basketball. The former Purdue superstar, headed for the NBA Draft in June, appeared on the mound Monday night, throwing out the first pitch for the Chicago Cubs ahead of their matchup against the San Diego Padres.

Though praised for his exceptional length at 7-foot-4 and tough physicality, few of Edey's athletic traits were on display during Monday's first pitch — hurling an absolute clunker that leaned left heavier than Brett Maher's field goal attempts.

To watch Edey pitch about as poorly as ESPN's Stephen A. Smith proved to be a major disappointment.

Luckily, Edey's strong college resume can survive getting the yips on his first pitch. This past season, Edey became the first player since Bill Walton in 1973 to win unanimous National Player of the Year honors. He averaged 25.2 points, 12.2 rebounds. 2.2 blocks and 2.0 assists — shooting 62.3 percent from the field. The ex-Boilermaker is projected to be selected in the 10-20 range for the upcoming draft.
