Ex ITV GMB presenter Piers Morgan mocks David Beckham and furious fans rush to footballer's defence

Controversial figure Piers Morgan has come under fire from David Beckham fans after he mocked the former England international’s footballing career. Piers was also ridiculed by Gary Lineker for using the Super League to poke fun at the right-winger.

The 56-year-old who was in the USA for the tournament grunted on social media alongside a picture of Los Angeles Rams player Odell Beckham Jr, reports The Mirror .

Next to a picture of the star, he tweeted: "Great to watch a Beckham who can actually play football. #SuperBowl." This went down like a pint of sick with British fans who immediately leapt to defend their icon.

Furious Beckham fans rushed to his defence, with one saying: "Beckham's one free-kick is bigger than your whole s****y career."

"You have no idea what you're talking about you silly little man. David Beckham is ten times the man you are," another fumed. "Oh here we go again! Piers is threatened by yet another man who's more successful than him," someone else suggested.

Meanwhile, a fourth quipped: "You wish you were him." Elsewhere, TV presenter Lineker, 61, replied to Morgan on Twitter as he defended Becks.

"You might dislike him, for whatever reason, but David Beckham was a great footballer. One of our finest," he insisted.

Morgan used Lineker's phrasing with a mocking reply which read: "You might want to suck up to him, for whatever reason, but Beckham was the most overrated player in history. Wouldn't have got onto the Arsenal Invincibles bench."

He went on: "Take away the crossing and free-kicks, he was a fame-hungry snail with dumb haircuts who only won that much because of the truly great players around him."
