Ex-Gillingham striker Danny Kedwell stands down as manager of Isthmian South East club AFC Croydon Athletic

Former Gillingham striker Danny Kedwell has stepped down as manager of AFC Croydon Athletic.

Kedwell, 43, took charge of the Rams in February last year, shortly after leaving Ashford United.

He led them to last season’s Isthmian South East play-off final, after finishing runners-up behind champions Three Bridges, losing on penalties to AFC Whyteleafe.

Croydon lost 3-1 at home to Margate in Kewell’s final game in charge, and he leaves with the south London club ninth in the table, outside the play-offs on goal difference.

The Rams are co-owned by former Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha, who thanked Kedwell for his efforts.

“Danny Kedwell will step down from his role as first-team manager with immediate effect,” said a club statement.

“Danny has been leading the team since February 2024, and in that time he has given the club his knowledge, his energy and his passion.

“Every manager leaves their mark on a club, and Danny’s is in the players he has backed, the standards he has set and the spirit he has brought to the Mayfield Stadium.

Danny Young and Wilfried Zaha, owners of the club, would like to personally thank Danny for all that he has done for the club both on and off the pitch.

“We would like to thank Danny for all his hard work, grit and determination to take us to the next level.

“With his personal circumstances changing, this is the right time to move on. The club wishes him all the best with his next chapter. We’ll be cheering you all the way.”

Croydon are in Kent to play Deal Town this weekend.
