Newcastle became the wealthiest club in the world when they were taken over back in October - so it's hard to look past the Magpies when you ponder which Premier League clubs could smash their current transfer records in the coming weeks.

It was three years ago today that Newcastle captured their current record buy, Joelinton, in a £40million deal from Hoffenheim.

But transfers have kicked up a gear since the Brazilian arrived in England, and a whole host of clubs have already spent far more money on transfers. Here, Mirror Football gives you the rundown on every club's record signing - and a couple who could be looking to break them before the new season kicks off...

Arsenal splashed out £72m to bring Nicolas Pepe to the club back in the summer of 2019, but unfortunately, the winger has only managed to establish himself as one of the club's worst ever signings.

Despite the fact he was signed to take the Gunners to the next level, Pepe has managed just 27 goals in 112 games and is seemingly not in Mikel Arteta's plans going forward.

The Londoners are keen to offloaded Pepe this summer - but they will have to take a huge hit to finally bin the 27-year-old.

Aston Villa shelled out a substantial sum to prise Emiliano Buendia away from Norwich last summer, and the £38m man has had a respectable maiden season at Villa Park, netting four league goals and contributing six assists.

But Steven Gerrard will be hoping for bigger and better things from the 25-year-old next term as he bids to push Villa up the table - and given that the Villa hierarchy have backed their manager in the transfer market since his arrival, there is a chance that the Midlands outfit could splash out on a deal that would eclipse the amount they paid for
