"Every day of the week" – Sky Sports reporter drops big Tottenham claim involving Matt Doherty

Tottenham‘s Matt Doherty should be starting over Emerson Royal “every day of the week”, according to Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge.

Doherty is enjoying his best run in the team since joining for £15m from Wolves having recently established himself as first choice right wing-back.

It’s generally been a miserable 18 months since the Republic of Ireland international swapped Spurs for Wolves last summer, but there’s been some light at the end of the tunnel recently for Doherty.

Having hardly had a look in all season, the 30-year-old was given a rare chance to impress against Leeds last month when he was thrown into the starting XI ahead of Royal, who signed for £25.8m in 2021.

Doherty took his rare chance with both hands, scoring his first Tottenham goal to break the deadlock before he teed up Dejan Kulusevski soon after.

His purple patch continued when he assisted both of Harry Kane’s goals in the thumping win over Everton, and while he hasn’t directly contributed to another goal since then, he’s kept his place in the side, starting five Premier League games on the bounce for the first time as a Spurs player.

Epitomising his recent improvements, Doherty was Spurs’ fourth best player against West Ham last time out, making the most tackles (4), one of which led to the opening goal, while he managed the joint-most clearances (3) along with Cristian Romero.

As a result of his form, Bridge doesn’t believe there’s a debate anymore as to who should be starting at right wing-back.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Players are really stepping up now, and he is one of them, who’s really stepping up.

“It’s not even a debate, you’d have him over Royal every day of the week.”
