Everton must finally axe “poor" £100k-p/w flop who lost the ball every 2 touches v SFC - opinion
Frank Lampard clearly took a ‘don’t fix what isn’t broken’ approach to their away game in the Premier League on Saturday as he made not a single change to his starting line up from the winning team at Goodison Park last weekend, and to say it didn’t pay off is an understatement.
Southampton dominated every aspect of the game against Everton at St Mary’s, scoring twice against the Toffees and having the most possession of the ball throughout the game, with Lampard’s side leaving the south coast empty-handed, and now just four points shy of the relegation zone.
Collectively the team put in a less than satisfactory performance, but one player who had recently made his return to the team proved exactly why he has struggled to pick up appearances during his time at the club, despite putting in a convincing performance against Leeds United the week before.
Alex Iwobi has easily been one of Everton’s worst signings costing the club up to £34m in transfer fees and £5.2m-per-annum in wages since he joined the club in 2019, with the winger scoring just six goals and assisting six times in 83 appearances.
It’s not just his goal involvements that have let down the side over the last few years, with the game against Southampton on Saturday afternoon a prime example of the lack of output the forward offers the Toffees side.
According to SofaScore, Iwobi was the second-lowest rated player on the pitch (6.3) and it’s hardly surprising when he lost two-thirds of his duels, made zero attempts to shoot on or off target and lost the ball in every 2 of his 32 touches throughout his 65 minutes of game time against Saints.
Lampard must now ruthlessly axe the £100k-per-week flop who was labelled “poor” by Carlton Palmer, as he has proven time
