Everton board could turn to 'firefighter' after Burnley defeat

Everton owner Farhad Moshiri and chairman Bill Kenwright may look to sack Frank Lampard and bring in a short-term managerial option in a bid to boost their hopes of Premier League football remaining at Goodison Park, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Toffees’ hopes of avoiding the drop took another worrying twist last night as a late Maxwel Cornet goal condemned the Merseyside outfit to a 3-2 defeat at the hands of fellow strugglers Burnley.

Dropping into the Championship remains a distinct possibility despite Lampard being drafted in as Everton’s manager in January, with his main aim being to guide his new employers away from a relegation dogfight after Rafa Benitez’s sacking.

However, the 43-year-old has been unable to turn the tide and the Toffees are now just one point clear of the dreaded relegation zone.

Following the latest setback at the hands of Burnley, Lampard insisted his charges need to ‘keep fighting’ for Premier League survival and was left to rue costly errors, including a misplaced clearance from Ben Godfrey which led to Cornet’s winner five minutes from time.

Everton’s demise came into sharp focus when Burnley chief Sean Dyche revealed his half-time team talk included telling his players ‘I’m not sure these know how to win a game, away from home particularly’.

Despite sitting precariously above the drop zone, Lampard hinted that he has no intention of walking away from the job.

He told BBC Sport: “We have to give absolutely everything, every ounce that we have. I will certainly do that and everybody has to do the same.”
