European Championships: Fans react to Team GB heartbreaking baton drop in relay

It was heartbreak for Great Britain on Sunday night as the women’s relay team were unable to finish the 4x100m event at the European Championships.

Ghosts of nightmare relays past came back to haunt the Brits as Asha Philip failed to pass the baton to teammate Imani‑Lara Lansiquot on the second leg.

Their fate meant they were unable to defend their title and as a result, hosts Germany went on to win gold, edging out Team GB in the overall standings and finishing top of the final medal table.

“I’m shocked by what happened out there,” a disappointed Philip said after the race. “I can’t really get my head around it. We came here to defend our title but things just didn’t go my way in that race.”

The Brits were expected to bring a golden curtain down on the 2022 European Championships, but a dream ending was not to be.

Despite the heartbreak, supporters have backed the quartet and have shown their support for the runners, particularly Philip, on social media.

“Aw Asha Philip, sending you lots of love and warmest wishes,” one fan wrote.

“Asha Philip looks mortified,” another said, alongside an uncertain emoji.

“Poor Asha Philip, really felt for her in the relay but it happened to France as well, mistakes happen,” a third justified.
