Euro 2022 semi-final key battle: Georgia Stanway vs Filippa Angeldahl
Despite being just 23, Stanway is the top goalscorer in Manchester City’s history and has won 38 England caps but she has made no more important intervention than her magnificent extra-time winner against Spain in the quarter-final at the Amex Stadium.
While her versatility is one of the Cumbrian’s greatest assets it is as a box-to-box midfielder that Stanway has shone for club and country and don’t let her 5ft 4in stature fool anyone that she isn’t prepared to put her foot in where it hurts.
England have played plenty of lovely flowing football during this tournament but when grit and determination was called for, Stanway produced it in abundance in 120 minutes against Spain.
Stanway is leaving the Women’s Super League behind for Bayern Munich this summer but her former City team-mate Angeldahl will be a familiar face in Sweden’s midfield tonight.
The 25-year-old has already made her mark on the tournament with two goals in the group-stage victory over Portugal.
She has also taken on extra responsibility in the absence of Caroline Seger, the 232-capped skipper having missed the last two games and remaining a doubt for tonight’s game at Bramall Lane with a heel injury.
