Euro 2022: England's Alessia Russo compared to Dennis Bergkamp v Northern Ireland

Alessia Russo was on fire against Northern Ireland.

Having come on for Ellen White as a second-half substitute, the Manchester United striker scored twice within 10 minutes as the Lionesses thrashed their UK rivals 5-0. 

The 23-year-old has now scored three goals at Euro 2022 this year, despite starting none of England’s three group games. 

Russo rightly received plaudits for her impact off the bench on Friday, but fans were especially impressed with an individual moment of magic in the build-up to her second goal at St Mary’s.

After being fed a pass by her United teammate Ella Toone, Russo had her back to goal but took the ball in her stride –– taking just one touch as she swivelled and then rifled the ball past Jackie Burns. 

“What a baller. Top class stuff,” said one fan on Twitter. 

Meanwhile, someone else stated: “If you need me, I’ll be watching this on repeat for the foreseeable.” 

Sports reporter Beth Fisher, who posted the initial clip of Russo, said: “Probably responsible for half the views on this. Just sublime.”
