Erling Haaland debunked myth about 'weakness' in unseen Man City moment

When Manchester City announced back in May that they had reached an agreement for the transfer of Erling Haaland, City fans were understandably excited.

They had every right to be; City's new striker scored 86 goals in 89 games for Borussia Dortmund, earning a reputation as one of world footballs most lethal finishers. Taking big chances in big games was something City found relatively challenging last season, and for the modest sum of £51m they had addressed the issue.

However, there were of course those determined to pour cold water on the whole affair and make much of the 22-year-old's weaknesses. The main stick with which to beat Haaland was his supposedly poor ability on the ball — something that a striker in a Pep Guardiola team really does need.

Of course, Haaland is not the best striker in the world when it comes to build-up play, and his passing and creativity outside of the penalty area probably do not quite meet Guardiola's (high) expectations at this moment in time.

But the way some critics spoke about the topic you'd think that Haaland had never attempted a pass before, that all he knew how to do was shoot and run. Ask him to drop deep or — God forbid — create chances for others, and you'd end up with a bumbling giant resembling a fish out of water.

It's safe to say that those 'weaknesses' were very much overblown, as Haaland showed in City's 2-0 defeat of West Ham on Sunday. While he only had 16 touches of the ball in the first half, he did get more involved after half-time, bringing his total to 32 touches and 21 accurate passes made in 78 minutes.
