Erik ten Hag targets Ajax star Edson Alvarez who could help Man Utd improve in two areas
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is reportedly considering a move for Ajax defensive midfielder Edson Alvarez.
Alvarez has been a member of the Ajax squad under Ten Hag since 2019. The 24-year-old joined from Mexican outfit Club America, but only became a regular first-team player for Ajax in the 2012/22 season. Now, Ten Hag could be set for a reunion with Alvarez, as the new boss identifies him as a potential target.
That’s according to The Athletic, who claim that Ten Hag is a big admirer of the defensive-minded player from his time coaching at Ajax.
Following a disappointing campaign, it is expected that their will be drastic changes at Old Trafford within the first-team squad.
And with Alvarez being valued at £18m, he is well within the price range that Man Utd will have available to them in summer.
The Mexican was Ten Hag’s fifth most expensive signing during his reign at Ajax, arriving for £13.5m.
However, United may have to pay over his valuation to land Alvarez this summer.
He signed a new deal with the Dutch champions at the start of the season. He also has three years remaining on that deal, meaning Ajax will be in no hurry to sell.
Alvarez made 31 league appearances under Ten Hag last season, as well as seven appearances in the Champions League.
During that time, the Mexico international predominantly played in midfield, sitting just in front of the back four.
However, Alvarez is known for being versatile in his game. He can play as a central midfielder, as well as in defence as a centre back.
This could make him the ideal player for United. In recent years, the club have struggled in both those positions and are in desperate need of improvement.
Man Utd are also expected to sell a lot of regular starters
