Erik ten Hag sends message to Harry Maguire as Pep Guardiola laughs off Manchester United debate

Here are your Manchester United morning headlines on Saturday, October 1.

Erik ten hag insists he believes in Manchester United captain Harry Maguire and is convinced the centre-back will recover from his prolonged malaise.

Maguire has been out of form for over a year, lost his place in the United side to Raphael Varane in August and has only started one of the last six games.

The 29-year-old endured a chastening evening for England in their 3-3 draw with Germany at Wembley on Monday night when he conceded a penalty and was dispossessed for the counter-attack that led to Kai Havertz's goal.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has addressed the debate surrounding Lisandro Martinez’s height ahead of the visit of Manchester United by praising the defender.

Some have claimed the Argentine’s 5ft 9in stature will be problematic against the red hot City striker Erling Haaland, who stands at 6ft 4in. Among those concerned by the difference in height is Jamie Carragher who told Martinez to “keep away” from Haaland during Sunday’s contest.

The City striker has netted 14 goals in nine Blues games and scored against Slovenia for Norway during the international break. Just two of his goals have been headers, but some are concerned that his physicality alone will be too much for the United defence to handle.
