Erik ten Hag reveals what he wants to do after managing Manchester United

New Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has revealed he may one day make a 'romantic' return to Ajax in the future, even if it is unlikely.

Ten Hag has now left Ajax after five very successful years, leaving off the back of clinching a third Eredivisie league title. For most of his time in charge, he worked alongside director of football Marc Overmars, who left the club in disgrace earlier this year.

Overmars quit the Amsterdam club in February after coming under fire for sending inappropriate messages to female colleagues. He has since joined Royal Antwerp.

Ten Hag gave Overmars a slice of the credit for his side's title triumph and discussed the potential of working alongside him at the Johan Cruyff Arena again.

"We humans are in this world to help each other not to shoot each other," he said. "This championship is also his championship.

"We built this team together. After the game against Heerenveen, I also congratulated Marc with the title via text. It’s a romantic thought to return to Ajax together one day. We have been very successful together. It’s hard to say if it will happen, but it could happen."

Ten Hag has now arrived in Manchester and has begun working at United, calling time on his reign at Ajax early, though he won't take charge of the side for the final match of the season at Crystal Palace. The Dutchman will miss Ajax's end of season trip to Curaco in order to get a headstart at Old Trafford.

"It’s time to turn the switch now,’ he added. "It’s something that is needed because there is a lot to take care of and I have the energy for it. We have agreed that I will be employed by Manchester United from May 16."
