Erik ten Hag wants to see his first-team squad strengthened before the end of the summer window, but he’s also not afraid of streamlining it in the process if it means getting the players he wants.

The Dutchman is eager to sign two midfielders, at least one new forward, a back-up goalkeeper and a new right-back before deadline day, though it seems like wishful thinking after a summer in which his club struggled with recruitment again.

Manchester United fans will only believe such lofty ambitions could be achieved when they see them come to fruition, but after a dire start to the season, the club can be under no illusion that drastic change is still required if they really are to turn a corner.

Any player would be fortunate to keep their place in the United line-up when Liverpool visit Old Trafford next week, a game that is set to take place amid a backdrop of fresh protests against the Glazer’s ownership of the club.
