Erik ten Hag might be one game away from realising he's made a rare Man United transfer mistake

Manchester United travel to north London to face Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

United will come up against a new-look Spurs side in Ange Postecoglou’s first Premier League fixture at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Postecoglou’s summer signing James Maddison will likely be making his home debut for the club wearing the number 10 shirt after Harry Kane’s recent departure to Bayern Munich.

Maddison has previously been linked with a move to Old Trafford. Before the signing of Mason Mount this summer, the former Leicester playmaker was said to be on United's shortlist as Erik ten Hag searched for a younger and more energetic creator.

Maddison has admitted that he was a boyhood United fan and idolised Wayne Rooney. The English midfielder even made his Premier League debut at Old Trafford after his move to Leicester from Norwich City in 2018.

Speaking to Sky Sports in 2019, looking back on his debut, Maddison said, “After the game, I did think to myself I’ve just played at Old Trafford in the Premier League, something I dreamed about as a young boy.”

Last week the England midfielder made his debut for Tottenham at the Gtech Community Stadium in a 2-2 draw with Brentford.

After Son Heung-min and Cristian Romero had been withdrawn, Maddison donned the captain’s armband. The 26-year-old is clearly already considered a senior figure in Postecoglou's group. The boyhood United fan provided 19 goal contributions for relegated Leicester last season, chipping in with 10 goals and nine assists.
