Erik ten Hag makes Donny van de Beek decision ahead of Manchester United arrival

Incoming Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is set to hand Donny van de Beek a chance to revive his career at Old Trafford next season.

Van de Beek, 25, has struggled for the Red Devils since signing from Ajax in 2020 and was sent out on loan to Everton in January after being deemed surplus to requirements by interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

However his former boss at Ajax – Ten Hag – is set to takeover at United this summer and, according to The Telegraph, the 52-year-old is planning to include the midfielder in his pre-season squad.

Van de Beek will be pleased to be given a second opportunity to impress in Manchester following his limited game-time at Old Trafford and having fallen behind the likes of Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes and Fred in the pecking order.

In two years at Manchester United, he has only made 27 Premier League appearances, scoring two goals, compared to his productive Ajax stint in which he made 175 appearances – many under Tan Hag – and scored 41 goals.

Since joining Everton on a six-month loan, Van de Beek has failed to secure a regular starting place at Goodison Park, making just six appearances in the Premier League as his career continues to slide in the wrong direction.

Earlier this season, Van de Beek spoke of his frustration at not being able to make an impact at Old Trafford.

He said: ‘It’s not easy if you are not playing, also not for the confidence and everything. I train really hard every day.

‘I have asked to play more. You can train hard every day, but in the end, you need game time.

‘If you only play once a month, you cannot show your best form – playing is really important.’
