Erik ten Hag is about to prove something about Manchester United wins vs Arsenal and Liverpool

Erik ten Hag has managed to orchestrate a rather unexpected Manchester United turnaround in quick time, following the opening two fixtures of the season.

The picture looked extremely worrying for United after being picked apart by Brentford in that awful 4-0 defeat in August. Nobody, apart from perhaps the boss himself, expected the team to bounce back with an emphatic 2-1 win over Liverpool. Even Bruno Fernandes later admitted he didn’t expect the result.

But that triggered a four-game winning run in the Premier League that still stands heading into Sunday’s derby with Manchester City. Ten Hag has shown he has the man management skills to get his players firing again, but this weekend offers a different test away from home against the league champions.

Wins over Liverpool and Arsenal at Old Trafford were excellent but in either game, United have not had to come from behind, something notoriously difficult to do on the road in the Premier League.

City will surely enjoy most of the possession on Sunday, although this isn’t necessarily a bad thing given that United’s counter-attacking traits against Liverpool and Arsenal worked a treat. But Ten Hag's men will have to show heightened mental resilience and the Dutchman himself will be required to keep his nerve.

He will likely allow his team to soak up pressure for a lot of the match, relying on the break to provide a sucker-punch. But if his team are behind in the final 20 minutes of the game, he will have to act and change it up.

Substitutions will be crucial in the contest. Getting it right can be the difference between a result and failure.
