Erik ten Hag has already given Jurrien Timber captaincy verdict ahead of Man United decision

Erik ten Hag has made no secret of his admiration for Ajax defender Jurrien Timber, and continued his trend in his final interview as Ajax boss.

The centre-half has been hotly linked with a move to Manchester United when Ten Hag takes up his Old Trafford position this summer. His representatives sent fans wild with a cryptic social media post last week, prior reports claiming they had landed in England ahead of a transfer.

The player has since posted an Instagram message himself, which joyfully summed up his time at Ajax following their latest Eredivisie title success. Meanwhile, few United players will be posting such warm words after a torrid season.

One issue that has cropped up is Harry Maguire’s captaincy. The defender has had a rough campaign, leading supporters to urge Ten Hag to rethink who holds the role.

Some of them have called for the England international to lose the armband while others argue there are not many other leaders in the side who can bear it. But they could get a potential future solution to the problem if United can secure the signing of Timber.

Ten Hag has praised the character of the 20-year-old, stating he believes he has the capability to become a skipper. Speaking in his interview, he said: “He is another great leader that was trained at Ajax. Besides his football skills he has the personality to become a captain.”
