Erik ten Hag gives verdict on Lisandro Martinez's start at Manchester United

Erik ten Hag is delighted with the start Lisandro Martinez has made at Manchester United and, in particular, the physicality he has brought to their defensive line.

The Argentine started on the opening day in a defeat to Brighton and was hooked at half-time during the 4-0 thrashing at Brentford, but responded in style with a starring performance against Liverpool on Monday night.

Martinez, 24, partnered Raphael Varane in the heart of the United defence and played a key role in securing the three points with his bullish approach against the Liverpool frontline.

His fine defensive work laid the foundations for United to go on and win the game thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, a win that sent them above Jurgen Klopp's side in the table.

Speaking after the match, Ten Hag hailed his new signing for his brilliant performance and the unique talent he brings to the back-four.

"I think that is what he is bringing into the squad," Ten Hag told reporters when asked about Martinez's physical presence. "That is one of his attributes. He can bring that into this squad, into this team. I think we can also say this against Brighton; he brought a really good performance."
