Erik ten Hag gives Manchester United injury update after Sevilla disaster

Erik ten Hag has explained he will have to wait to assess the damage suffered to his Manchester United squad during the shocking defeat to Sevilla.

Despite at one stage cruising in the tie after going 2-0 up at Old Trafford, United were unceremonially dumped out of the Europa League on Thursday in a disastrous 3-0 defeat in Spain. Harry Maguire hopelessly gave the ball away in the first few minutes to gift an opening goal and the side was never able to recover.

David de Gea failed to keep out a looping ball off a shoulder just after the break before getting caught out miles outside of his box for the killing blow. The night was made even worse by the fact Ten Hag's squad suffered yet more injuries.

Anthony Martial was forced to limp off the field after the Frenchman suffered yet another injury, his seventh of the season. Luke Shaw, in his return to action after a spell on the sidelines, also appeared to pick up a knock that left him moving gingerly but managed to see out the game.

Ten Hag has revealed the players will be assessed on Friday ahead of Sunday's FA Cup semi-final with Brighton. The Dutchman told United's in-house media: "It’s difficult, in this moment, we have to wait.

"We have to see tomorrow and then we return to England and then we can make up the bill from today, what happened, and then, yeah, we can look forward to the game on Sunday [against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Emirates FA Cup semi-final] and then we will see which team we can pick."

The manager also expressed his frustration with such a poor display. "A disappointing performance. It was not good enough," he added.
