Erik ten Hag explains what Anthony Martial is doing amid good form for Manchester United

Erik ten Hag believes Anthony Martial can become an even better striker at Manchester United if he maintains his focus.

Martial scored his second goal in as many games on United's pre-season tour in the 4-1 win over Melbourne Victory, having spent the second half of last season on loan at Sevilla.

The 26-year-old has started as the centre forward in United's friendlies against Melbourne and Liverpool while Cristiano Ronaldo continues to train in Portugal.

Martial scored only once for United last term before he joined Sevilla and he managed seven goals in a disappointing 2020-21.

United are pursuing an attacking reinforcement in the transfer market but Martial could start the season if Ronaldo is unavailable for selection and United fail to make an addition up front.

"I'm sure he can come back even better," Ten Hag said. "I think when he has the right focus and the right motivation and he works hard he will have production because he is a good player.

"I say when he has the right focus and every day delivers much then he will have production and it's up to him."

There has been uncertainty over Martial's future amid United's desire for a new forward and his poor form in the last two years but he is expected to line up against Crystal Palace at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Tuesday.

Martial is contracted to United until 2024 and the club has the option of an additional year.
