Erik ten Hag can use his Ajax connections to sign David de Gea replacement at Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag knows he needs to solve his goalkeeper problem sooner rather than later this summer.

David de Gea has been a loyal servant to the Reds and achieving the award of Golden Glove this season should be recognised. Moving forwards though, he is not what United need.

On too many occasions, De Gea was found wanting. The keeper lacks the capabilities to play out from the back which is an essential component of Ten Hag's style.

United surrendered possession too frequently when De Gea was on the ball and it could have been more costly than it was. The Spaniard's shot-stopping was also called into question too.

It is widely agreed De Gea should have done better for Ilkay Gundogan's winner in the FA Cup final but this was just one example where he conceded too easily. Sevilla away was also a torrid night for the 'keeper.

Ten Hag seems to know the 32-year-old's time as No.1 is coming to an end. While he has remained adamant the Spaniard will sign a contract extension, he was coy when asked if he will remain first choice.

Plenty of names have been linked with a move to United to take over from De Gea. MEN Sport understands Anderlecht's Bart Verbruggen is on Ten Hag's shortlist but Brentford's David Raya and Porto's Diogo Costa have also been touted.

One player who could be added to the list is Inter Milan's Andre Onana. Even in defeat on Saturday night, the 27-year-old showcased his ability as a world class goalkeeper.

He commanded his area well and showed comfort when playing out from the back. His stats also are also impressive too having kept 19 clean sheets and conceding just 36 times in 41 appearances.
