England: Ronan O’Gara backs Eddie Jones but would be open to taking over his job

La Rochelle head honcho and Ireland legend Ronan O’Gara is open to the idea of becoming England coach, but has backed Eddie Jones’ methods.

Jones has come under fire after a poor Six Nations campaign despite the Rugby Football Union claiming they saw progress in the tournament, much to the confusion of their fan base.

However, speaking to JOE last month, O’Gara believes that Jones is the right man to take England forward.

“England will be fine, I think. My view isn’t a popular view – I think Eddie Jones is a very smart coach. Like in most things, you can’t beat experience. I was in the ground, at Yokohama, when England dismantled New Zealand. It was an exhibition of rugby. It was impressive, at pitch level. It stays with me to this day.” O’Gara said.

“He’s the boss and he structures his team how he wants to, to get them to win a World Cup. From all the evidence of the last 20 years, and with what lies ahead, I think he has a plan. His plan usually works!”

Jones is highly likely to take England into the next World Cup but, speaking to BT Sport, O’Gara would certainly consider taking on the role when the Australian leaves.

“Yeah, it would be a great job I think actually,” O’Gara claimed.

“Yeah, what a team. There’s so much potential there. There’s serious rugby players; serious passion for the game in England. It’s a cracking job, you’d love to have a go off that.”

The decision on who will succeed Jones has been in the spotlight following the completion of the Six Nations. Several names have been thrown into the mix, including Andy Farrell, Shaun Edwards, Richard Cockerill, Steve Borthwick and Rob Baxter.
