England fans' heartbreak after Lionesses lose Women's World Cup final

England fans have taken to social media following the Lionesses' heartbreaking World Cup final defeat to Spain in Sydney.

Spain took the lead in the first half through Olga Carmona and Sarina Wiegman's side had their chances, but fell short of that all important equaliser. Jorge Vilda's side had the opportunity to extend their lead in the second half after they were awarded a penalty for a handball in the box.

VAR stepped in to penalise England midfielder Keira Walsh but Mary Earps stepped up with her heroics once again and ensured her side had a fighting chance. But, it wasn't to be as Spain were crowned World Champions following the narrow 1-0 win.

Plenty of fans took to social media following their defeat to express their disappointment with the defeat, but the pride felt towards a team that have provided so much joy over the last year.

Tracey Wilks said she is 'massively proud' of the Lioness team, while AJ wrote 'Can't fault their effort this tournament though. Done everyone so proud'.

Here is an example of some of the fan reaction on Twitter:

Sunday's final was England's second at a major tournament under Sarina Wiegman after they progressed to the Euro final last year and edged past Germany 2-1 at Wembley. The next European Championships will take place in Switzerland in 2025 before the next Women's World Cup in 2027.
