England captain Eoin Morgan set to retire from international cricket

England white-ball captain Eoin Morgan is reportedly set to announce his retirement from international cricket.

According to BBC Sport, an official announcement could be made on Tuesday. The news comes after England enjoyed a 3-0 ODI series whitewash over the Netherlands.

However, Morgan struggled with both form and fitness that series, getting out for a duck in the first two ODIs before missing the final match with a groin injury. Speaking before the series began, the 35-year-old declared: "If I don't think I am good enough or I don't feel I am contributing to the team, then I will finish."

And with England's wins over the Netherlands highlighting the depth of talent at their disposal in white ball cricket, Morgan appears to have decided the time is right to step away. Current vice-captain Jos Buttler is the favourite to take over as skipper, while all-rounder Moeen Ali has also deputised for Morgan in recent months.

Reacting to the news on BBC Test Match Special, Moeen said: "It is and isn't [a surprise] at the same time. I think it is because obviously the World Cup is not too far away and for us, he's a perfect leader.

"He's done an amazing job, he knows what it takes to win and it's strange to comprehend the side without him. Obviously things move on and you get used to it, but it is sad.

"I'm not surprised at the same time because he is a very selfless person and he's probably thinking about the team more than anything. We've been so strong over the years and he probably feels like his time is done."

Morgan took over as England's ODI captain just two months before the 2015 Cricket World Cup after Sir Alastair Cook was removed due to a poor run of form.
