Emmerdale fans heartbroken for Lydia after attack as fans work out who'll 'save the day' and Craig's 'downfall'

Emmerdale fans are hoping they have spotted what will lead to Craig Reed's 'downfall' after being left heartbroken over his attack on Lydia Dingle. The character was left shell-shocked when her former childhood friend forced himself onto her.

The shocking rape took place in scenes aired in the ITV soap on Tuesday night (September 5) after an uncomfortable Lydia decided to stop working as a cleaner at Craig's gaming company over fears she was leading him on.

Lydia and Craig came back into contact during scenes aired last month (August) after he spotted her at a jobs fair at the Hide. The pair have since been seen bonding after Lydia told Craig she had given birth to their stillborn baby when they were in a teenage relationship while living in the same children's home.

Lydia and Craig have since been talking about their son, Toby, and paid a visit to the bridge where she scattered baby Toby's ashes with Craig later suggesting as they sat in the car that they do it more often.

But Craig's behaviour took a sinister turn and as he refused to accept Lydia's resignation and suggested they could rekindle their childhood romance. While she tried to tell him she was with Sam and that hadn't changed, he forced himself on Lydia. After the attack, Lydia was devastated but was driven home by her attacker who acted as if what had happened was consensual.

Fans rushed to social media to share their upset after watching Lydia's ordeal unfold, with one admitting that while depicting the topic was 'important,' the scenes were still 'difficult to watch.'
