Emma Raducanu news: John McEnroe questions big decision after US Open win

John McEnroe has repeated his suggestions that Emma Raducanu was “overwhelmed” when she pulled out of Wimbledon last summer, as he questioned one key decision made after her fairytale US Open win.

McEnroe was criticised for suggesting Raducanu pulled out of her fourth-round match against Australian Ajla Tomljanović at the All England Club because the “moment was too much for her”, even though the British teenager later confirmed she “the whole experience has caught up with me”.

Raducanu then struck back in the most remarkable fashion possible by winning the US Open a few months later, with the debate over what comes next for the player set to rise to No 14 in the WTA Rankings next week now a hot topic.

Now McEnroe has insisted he is backing Raducanu to shine in 2022, although he told the Daily Mail that he is expecting a bumpy road for the player who lost in the second round of the Australian Open.

“Expectations have now been ramped up in an unbelievable way,” stated the seven-time Grand Slam champion.

“It was overwhelming for her at Wimbledon and then she had this magical run (at the US Open).

“It would be unbelievable if she’s around for the next 10 years doing well, that would be outstanding. She seems like a sweet girl, she’s got game, charisma, she’s got everything. I’m pulling for her, it’s not going to be easy, I’m sure she’s trying to figure it all out right now.”
