Emma Raducanu made tennis history when she won a tournament at just 13 years old

Nineteen-year-old Emma Raducanu won a Grand Slam at the US Open in September 2021. The then, 18-year-old became the first British woman to win a Grand Slam since Virginia Wade at in 1977.

However, this was by no means the first time the Toronto-born pro has conquered a tennis match. Raised in London, Raducanu made tennis history as a young teenager.

At just 13 years old, Radacanu became the youngest ever winner of an ITF Under-18 event when she lifted the Nike Junior International in Wavertree. This win came after Radacanu signed up for the tournament on her 13th birthday, which is the minimum age to play at the event.

At the teen tournament, Raducanu faced fellow Brit Lauryn John Baptiste in the final organized by Northern Vision. She won 6-1 6-4. In recognition of her well-deserved win, Emma received the iconic “Liverbird” trophy.

The popular tournament at the time received over 500 player applicants and Raducanu made it through successfully. Organizing the tournament that year was Anders Borg and he remembers Emma playing at the time. He recalled: ‘‘You could tell right away she was going places, even though she lost a few early rounds in junior Wimbledon."

"She was a super nice girl, down to earth and just a dream come through for the LTA who has supported her over the years."
