Emma Raducanu breaks three tennis rackets in one session as she prepares for WTA Tour return
Emma Raducanu revealed she broke three tennis rackets in one session as she prepares for her return to the WTA Tour.
The 19-year-old has travelled to Guadalajara for the Abierto Akron Zapopan, a WTA 250 event.
The tournament begins tomorrow and also features Madison Keys, defending champion Sara Sorribes Tormo and Sloane Stephens.
Raducanu will be competing for the first time since the Australian Open, where she fell to Danka Kovinić in the third round.
The US Open champion will be aiming to get more WTA Tour experience under her belt in Mexico, and she certainly seems to be training hard.
In a photo shared on Instagram, Raducanu revealed that the strings of three tennis rackets had snapped during one training session.
“Lol is it the altitude or topspin,” she wrote. “One session, three strings”.
Raducanu will come up against Daria Saville tomorrow. Her Australian opponent, ranked 627nd in the world, was known as Daria Gavrilova until she got married last year.
The 27-year-old has earned one WTA title during her career, triumphing at the Connecticut Open in 2017.
If Raducanu overcomes Saville, she will play either Lin Zhu or a qualifier in the second round. A rematch against Stephens could come next – the pair played in the first round of the Australian Open.
Sorribes Tormo or Keys could be waiting for Raducanu in the final, if she makes it that far.
Raducanu stunned the world of tennis when she became the first qualifier, male or female, to win a Grand Slam.
She stormed to victory at the US Open in September, defeating Leylah Fernandez in the final to make history.
Since her improbable win, Raducanu has struggled to progress to the latter stages of a WTA tournament.
