Emma Raducanu appears to have recovered from hip injury as she trains for Indian Wells

Emma Raducanu looks to have recovered from an injury which forced her to withdraw from the Monterrey Open last month.

The 19-year-old sustained a hip injury at the Abierto Akron Zapopan in February, retiring from her first round match against Daria Saville.

She is yet to return to the tennis court, but her participation at Indian Wells is looking increasingly likely.

Raducanu has travelled to California and has been shown in training sessions for the WTA 1000 event. She appears to be moving freely, suggesting she has recovered from injury.

Qualifying for the women’s event at Indian Wells begins today, with the draw scheduled to take place tomorrow. First round matches will then get underway on Wednesday.

Known as the “fifth Grand Slam”, the tournament attracts some of the best talent in tennis.

Defending champion Paula Badosa and Qatar Open winner Iga Świątek will be competing, although world number one Ashleigh Barty has withdrawn.

Anett Kontaveit, who has reached seven WTA finals in as many months, is another on the start list. Naomi Osaka will play after receiving a wildcard for the tournament.

Amanda Anisimova and Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins will have the backing of the crowd as they seek to win a title on home soil.

Raducanu has competed at Indian Wells once before, losing to Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the first round.

Last year’s tournament took place in October due to the COVID-19 pandemic, just weeks after Raducanu’s improbable victory at the US Open.

She won 10 games in a row without dropping a set, becoming the first ever qualifier, male or female, to earn a Grand Slam title.

It was the first time a female British tennis player had won a major since Virginia Wade in 1977.
