Emma Hayes one of six new Chelsea trustees following Roman Abramovich’s departure

Emma Hayes is one of six trustees who have been left in charge of Chelsea, following Roman Abramovich’s statement announcing he is stepping away from the club.

On Saturday evening, Abramovich confirmed he is “giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable foundation the stewardship and care” of the club.

This decision comes amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Abramovich’s relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The statement read: “During my nearly 20-year ownership of Chelsea FC, I have always viewed my role as a custodian of the Club, whose job it is ensuring that we are as successful as we can be today, as well as build for the future, while also playing a positive role in our communities.

“I have always taken decisions with the Club’s best interest at heart. I remain committed to these values. That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable Foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC.

“I believe that currently, they are in the best position to look after the interests of the Club, players, staff, and fans.”

Hayes has been manager of Chelsea’s women’s team since 2012 and has won four Women’s Super League titles, three FA Cups and two League Cups during her time in charge of the club.

The English coach, who was previously the assistant manager at Arsenal ladies, was awarded an OBE in the 2022 New Year’s Honours list for her services to association football.

Hayes also served as a pundit at last year’s European Championships and became a key part of ITV’s coverage of the event.

Other trustees include chairman Bruce Buck, and John Devine ––  a partner in the sports team at law firm Muckle LLP.

Piarra Powar, Paul Ramos and Sir Hugh Robertson make up the rest of the six.
