Eight Irish athletes set for U20 World Championship

A team of eight athletes will represent Ireland at the World U20 Championships in Cali, Columbia across six days of competition beginning on 1 August.

The team will compete across both track and field events, with sprints, distance, hurdles, and long jump events all having Irish entries.

Leevale AC's Reece Ademola will be the first to compete in the championships in the men's Long Jump on the opening day. The 19 year old Corkman is currently the national U20 champion.

Oliver Sweeney begins Ireland's track campaign at the championships, joining the men’s 100m start line at 8pm on Bank Holiday Monday.

While competing in London in May this year, Sweeney set a PB of 10.47. This is 0.31 outside Paul Hession's national record of 10.18 from June 2007.

National U20 10000m record holder and European Cross-Country gold medallist Dean Casey goes in the 5000m at 1.55am on Day 1 of the World U20 Championships.
