Eid al-Fitr 2025 live updates as millions to celebrate end of Ramadan

Millions of Muslims across the world are set to celebrate Eid al-Fitr in the coming days. The celebration marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan which sees observers fast from dawn until dusk over 30 days.

Islam follows a lunar calendar and Ramadan and Eid are part of this cycle. This year the first day of Eid al-Fitr is expected to take place on Sunday, March 30 or Monday, March 31 depending on the sighting of the moon which determines the end of the month-long period of Ramadan and the beginning of Eid, which translates to the ‘festival of breaking the fast’.

Traditionally Eid prayers begin at sunset on the night the crescent moon is first sighted but many mosques do Eid prayers the following morning. Once prayers are finished Muslims gather with family and friends for special meals, give sweets or gifts and offer prayers.

Several countries including Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt and others that began Ramadan on March 1 are set to observe the crescent moon sighting on Saturday. The visibility of the crescent moon varies globally due to the Earth's shape and atmospheric conditions. Countries such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE typically sight the crescent moon earlier whereas south Asian countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh typically sight the moon a day late and therefore celebrate later. In countries where the crescent is sighted on Saturday, March 29 Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated on Sunday, March 30. If the crescent is not visible Eid will be observed on Monday, March 31.
