Egypt's Sisi runs for third term following crackdown on dissent

Africa is facing an unprecedented food crisis, according to a new report from the UN released earlier this week. More than three quarters of the population living on the continent cannot afford a healthy diet and a fifth are undernourished. This dire situation is in large part due to grain shortages triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, armed conflict in Africa itself, climate change and the fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic. 

Finally, the Guinean capital Conakry is currently hosting an international film festival called CinéNomad Afrique. The event is aimed at forging a renaissance in Guinean cinema – partly by training rural populations in the art of filmmaking. The initiative is supported by French director, Michel Gondry, who has founded an organisation named l’Usine de Films Amateurs – "the factory of amateur films". Our correspondents visited a village where the local community has come together to make their own film.
