Egan scare for Ireland as Blades draw with Everton

John Egan gave Republic of Ireland boss Stephen Kenny an unwelcome injury scare as he was forced off in the 68th minute of Sheffield United's thrilling 2-2 draw with Everton on Saturday.

Egan suffered a knock in the first half at Bramall Lane but continued midway through the second period, when he was replaced by Chris Basham.

Kenny will hope it's not serious ahead of a crucial week.

Ireland have two huge Euros qualifiers on the horizon, facing France in Paris on Thursday before an Aviva Stadium showdown with the Netherlands the following Sunday.

If Egan is forced to withdraw from those games Kenny may call up Andrew Omobamidele. The 21-year-old missed out on the initial 25-man squad but looks the obvious solution if required.

Omobamidele completed a transfer deadline day move to Premier League side Nottingham Forest from Norwich on Friday night for a reported fee of £20m [€23.3m].

New signing Cameron Archer scored one goal and created another as Sheffield United and the Toffees shared the spoils.

Everton took the lead through Abdoulaye Doucoure, scoring their first goal of the season in their fourth fixture. Archer, on his league debut following a move from Aston Villa, equalised before forcing an own goal from visiting goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Everton have been creating chances this season despite their lack of goals and found an equaliser of their own through Arnaut Danjuma on 55 minutes as they ended a run of three straight league defeats at the start of the campaign.

United were sloppy in possession, especially in their own half, but Everton could not take advantage and as has been the case so far this season they were wasteful in the opposition box.
