EFL strike major new TV deal affecting Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion

The English Football League have entered a two-year partnership with television network ITV to show Championship and Carabao Cup highlights from the start of next season.

The agreement will also see highlights from League One and Two as well as the Papa John’s Trophy return to terrestrial television for the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons.

This season, as they have been since the 2018/19 season, Quest has shown EFL highlights of Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion fixtures as part of a four-year arrangement that ends after this campaign.

Much like their predecessors, a Saturday round-up is set to be shown in a 9pm primetime slot on ITV4, with a re-run being shown on the main ITV channel at some stage later in the evening as well as a repeat on Sunday morning.

Full midweek rounds of Championship fixtures will also still be shown on their primary channel and ITV Hub, as will extensive coverage of the entire play-offs and each round of the Carabao Cup up until and including the final.

An hour-long programme is also in place for highlights of the Papa John’s Trophy final on ITV4.

Marking the announcement, EFL Chief Executive Trevor Birch said: “With 1891 matches played across the season, it’s crucial for the EFL that the very best of our match action is widely accessible and we are delighted that ITV will show highlights of our games for the next two years.

“As an experienced major broadcaster with a comprehensive sports portfolio, ITV’s commitment to high quality coverage will showcase the breadth and depth of our competitions to football supporters all over the country.”
