Early hours city centre attack leaves man in hospital

A man has been arrested following an early hours attack on a major city centre street.

A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault following the incident early on Saturday (May 13). A man in his 20s was taken to hospital with serious injuries, Greater Manchester Police have confirmed.

Emergency services were called to the scene just after 5am. The arrested man remains in custody, the force has said.

A cordon was in place at the junction of Portland Street and Chorlton Street, just metres from the city centre's bustling Piccadilly Gardens - typically packed with public transport users. The police tape remained in place for hours this morning as forensic officers swept the street, taking away in evidence bags a vodka bottle, jacket and first aid kit found at the scene.

"Shortly after 5am this morning (Saturday 13 May) Greater Manchester Police were called to concerns for welfare of a man at Portland Street, Manchester," GMP said in a statement.

"Emergency services attended and a man in his 20s was taken to hospital with serious injuries, but they are thankfully not believed to life threatening.

"A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault. He remains in police custody for questioning.

"The scene has now been closed."
