Durie's Boxing Club duo grab big wins over good weekend for Rutherglen club

Rutherglen boxing coach Archie Durie says he’s delighted with how his club is faring, after two of his fighters grabbed big wins earlier this month.

Reece McFarlane picked up a convincing debut victory, while Kevin Turtak bagged his first win in five attempts at the Antonine ABC show in the Grosvenor Hotel in Glasgow.

Sandyhills boxer McFarlane was first up in a 67kg bout against the home club’s Danny Marner, and punched through his high guard, going to head and body for all three rounds.

All five judges scored it unanimously to the Durie’s Boxing Gym fighter.

Turtak, 21, from Govanhill was up against Antonine boxer Steven Gerry and, after an even first round and a half, the Durie’s boxer caught his opponent with a couple of heavy right hands at the end of the second round.

When he caught Gerry with a big overhand right at the start of the third round, the referee started an eight-count, but halfway through his team threw in the towel.

Head coach Archie Durie said: “Reece made the best of his debut, meeting the Antonine boxer on the front foot and was aggressive. All five judges gave it to Reece, making it a good, winning start.

“Kevin hadn’t won a contest, having lost his last four bouts, and was up against a good boxer, but Kevin did well to catch his rival on the chin to get his first win with a third-round stoppage.

“Both our boys had the right attitude and were really up for their bouts, which showed in their performances.

“I was really pleased for Kevin, getting his first win in five in style.

“Well done to Reece, who showed great fitness, punching all the way through three hard rounds.”
