Dundalk goalscoring great Joe Martin dies aged 91

Former Dundalk striker and 1952 FAI Cup winner Joe Martin has passed away aged 91.

A Dundalk local, Martin played for the club between 1949 and 1960, scoring 109 goals in 212 appearances.

Martin was a prolific goalscorer throughout the first half of the 1950s and was a central figure in Dundalk's 1952 cup success, scoring five goals in the campaign.

He bagged a critical equaliser late in the drawn final against Cork Athletic at Dalymount Park. Dundalk won the subsequent replay 3-0 for their third FAI Cup success.

Martin, who departed Dundalk for Portadown in 1956, still sits fourth in the club's all-time goalscoring list.

He also made one appearance for the League of Ireland representative side against the West German league on St Patrick's Day 1951.

"We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of club legend Joe Martin," Dundalk FC tweeted on Monday evening.

"A prolific scorer who hit 109 goals in 212 appearances for the club between 1949 and 1960, 'the local hope' played an integral role in our 1952 FAI Cup win. RIP, Joe."
