Dubliner Byrne wins first Women's PDC event

Robyn Byrne became the first Irish darts player to win a PDC Women's Series event after victory at Milton Keynes yesterday.

The 25-year-old Dubliner beat Australia's Corinne Hammond, Finland's Kirsi Viinikainen and England's Lisa Ashton and her run to the final in event 7.

Byrne opened with a 13-dart leg in the decider against Laura Turner of England and ran out a 5-1 winner.

The £2,000 prize also pushed her up to fourth on the order of merit, with the top eight qualifying for the televised Women’s World Matchplay, which takes place on 23 July at the Winter Gardens.

Byrne told the PDC: "I've been in a couple of finals but to get over the line itself is huge. It's just unbelievable.

"It's absolutely huge - to [join previous winners] Beau Greaves, Fallon Sherrock, Lisa Ashton and Rhian O'Sullivan, you can't be in better company. I can't be any happier."

GLORY FOR BYRNE!
