Dublin Marathon city centre start and finish to remain

Despite concerns over the impact the Dublin Marathon has on traffic in the city centre, this year's race will again start and finish in the centre of the capital.

Following last year's event meetings took place between the organisers of the Dublin Marathon, the National Transport Authority and Dublin City Council over the route and location for the start and finish of his year's event.

Concerns had been raised with the event organisers about the impact the marathon has on traffic around Merrion Square over the October Bank Holiday weekend.

However, this year's marathon - scheduled for Sunday, 27 October - will begin on Leeson Street Lower and finish on Mount Street Upper rather than Merrion Square, with the course set to follow a similar route to last year.

Confirming the news, race director Jim Aughney told the Irish Examiner: "We are thrilled to confirm that the Irish Life Dublin Marathon will be on the streets of Dublin's city centre.

"Running the marathon is a momentous occasion for participants and being in the heart of the capital city makes that moment even more special for them and their families and friends who come out to support them. We also need to ensure a safe experience for everyone involved.

"We have worked closely with Dublin City Council on finalising the start and finish location. We are grateful for their support and look forward to making this event a success."
