Drama as athlete proposes to fiancée on court as UNIPORT takes early lead

Athletes and students at the ongoing UNILAG 2022 NUGA Games got a pleasant surprise, yesterday, when a handballer from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, proposed to his fiancée right inside the court.

‘Loverboy,’ Joseph Ambule of ABU handball team, took all around the centre court by surprise when he popped the big question to his girlfriend, Hashimu Sa’adatu, also of ABU Zaria, after their handball match against Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife.

Ambule, who captained ABU, shrugged off his team’s loss and exit from the competition, to propose to Sa’adatu to the delight of everybody present, including Handball Federation of Nigeria President, Sam Ocheho, was congratulated the lucky couple.

Meanwhile, University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) isn’t relinquishing leadership of the medals table at the ongoing NUGA Games as it has climbed up to 18 gold, 10 silver and 14 bronze medals for to a total of 42 medals as at yesterday.

Host, UNILAG, is second on the table, while NILE University, a private institution, is in third place.

Much of UNIPORT’s medals have come from the swimming event, which its has dominated.

The school won the100m butterfly men and women, as well as a bronze from the women’s 200m backstroke. It also won a bronze in the 50m breaststroke women’s event and got the gold and silver in the men’s 50m breaststroke.

UNILAG showed its mettle on the men’s football field, where they beat Adamawa State University 2-0, while their women team thrashed Bayero University Kano (BUK) 7-0.

On the hockey field, UNIJOS beat Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, while UNIBEN defeated Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) in the same event.
