Dover Athletic to face the first of two home games against Dorking Wanderers this Saturday when they meet in the league - ahead of next Saturday’s FA Cup clash at Crabble

Dover Athletic face a rare double test against Dorking Wanderers - and assistant boss Mike Sandmann is adamant they will not get distracted by what comes next.

The two sides meet at Crabble this Saturday in the National League South before going head-to-head again seven days later in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round.

It means Dover have two very different prizes to play for against the same opposition, with three league points up for grabs this weekend before a place in the first round proper is at stake the following Saturday.

Sandmann said: “I can't say if it's a good or a bad draw really! The little bit of pressure comes off your shoulders [in the FA Cup].

“If you're playing against a Step 4 team or Step 5 team, there's an expectation where you have to win. We go into every game preparing to win, of course we do, and we’ll do the same against Dorking.

“They’re a good side, great resources, good management team, good players, and it's going to be a hell of a game.

“We're looking forward to this Saturday first. Obviously that's going to be the main focus.

“We do our homework this week, prepare right, and then concentrate on the next one after Saturday.”

Playing the same opposition twice in successive weekends brings its own challenges, with both teams likely to learn plenty from the first meeting.

There is also the temptation to think about the FA Cup tie, particularly with a place in the first round proper within touching distance.

But Sandmann says Dover will not overcomplicate things.

He said: “You see teams and they rest players and they do this and they do that. I think sometimes teams can be a little bit too clever.
